Uncanny X-Men #453
Written By: Chris Claremont Art By: Andy Park, Jon Sibal, and Justin Ponsor Published By: Marvel Comics This Issue: "Chasing Hellfire" Part 2
PLOT: Sebastian Shaw is rebuilding the Lords Cardinal of the Hellfire Club. Is Sage returning to her old boss? Well, the X-Men want to find out and go after her reluctantly accepting the help of Emma Frost. Unfortunately, Emma Frost and Marvel Girl disappear. Bishop and Storm go to confront Shaw, and Nightcrawler and Wolverine go about tracking down their enemies in their own fashion, attracting attention in a public place. It turns out Emma and Rachel are in the company of slavers in Hong Kong...but what are Courtney Ross and Viper doing there? And Selene? And when Storm and Bishop confront Shaw things get crazy when Donald Pierce arrives. I really do like Claremont's work. He's not afraid to overlap stories and make things complicated, which makes me feel like he doesn't think I or any other reader is an idiot...but sometimes he can take things too far, and I think he's made this too complicated. Rating: No Worms
Originality: Well, it's hard to tell exactly what's going on...but I'll give Claremont credit for using established, known characters and villains rather than starting a whole new Hellfire Club with characters who won't have a chance to be developed because the next person who uses the Hellfire Club won't use them. Rating:
Characters: Good characters: Storm, Sebastian Shaw, Nightcrawler...ok characters: Wolverine, Donald Pierce, Bishop...bad characters: Emma Frost, Marvel Girl, Courtney Ross...characters who haven't really been used and their use will decide their fates...Sunspot, Sage, Viper, Selene Rating:
Continuity: Wolverine is shut down by either nannites or Bishop's blast while the others heal quickly? Storm and Bishop, both smart about tactics, rush off to confront Shaw without giving Wolverine the little time he needs to heal? Viper, a cold-blooded killer who very recently tried to nuke London...very recently...and she's trying to redeem herself? Yeah, ok...that last one could be a dupe, but I don't see Shaw being that gullible... Rating: No Worms
Art: Park's art isn't bad, but one thing I look for in a good artist is the ability to make two people look different without relying on hair color and costumes. Look at the scenes with Ross and Frost...they look identical except for hair style and clothing. Rating:
