New Ultimate Editorial: Secret Crisis of Infinite Conjunctions

     By: Clark Liles

So, have you been paying attention to the comic racks? Have you noticed the occurrence with comic titles? Well, just in case...let me spell it out to you...

New Avengers, New X-Men, New Thunderbolts...because apparently we need the adjective "new" to realize that it's a different series. Why's everything have to be labeled "new"? To distance itself from the old title? Well, that doesn't explain New Thunderbolts which pretty much exactly follows the Thunderbolts to the Avenger Thunderbolts titles to this new incarnation. Maybe because the new title really has nothing to do with the old title? Well, no...New Avengers is just an extension of the original Avengers series started in the 60's and restarted twice in the 90's. Why can't they just be Thunderbolts and Avengers and Academy X? Is it a marketing ploy? Is it an attempt to validate one of my pet peeves...rampant renumberings and startovers because most comic geeks are willing to give a first issue a shot before they give a 53rd issue with a new creative team a shot?

How about Ultimate Spider-Man, Ultimate X-Men, Ultimates, Ultimate Fantastic Four, Ultimate Elektra, Ultimate Iron Man...Do you know what made Marvel interesting for me in the old days? And for me the old days are early to mid 80s...the use of adjectives...INVINCIBLE Iron Man, AMAZING Spider-Man, INCREDIBLE Hulk, UNCANNY X-Men...Stan Lee loved his adjectives and I loved the Marvel titles because they were captivating...how Uncanny are the X-Men...how Invincible is Iron Man? Now, while most of those titles still exist...they are made mundane because the next title is Ultimate Brand Echh, or whatever...the term is "overkill"...be wary of it...

The last obsessive title trend is seen in X-Men Fantastic Four, Superman Batman, Spider-Man Daredevil, JLA Avengers, Daredevil Batman...what problem is that? Raise your hand if you remember the word called "and". It's called a conjunction because that's what it does...it conjuncts, connects, it glues together two separate things...The X-Men have teamed with the Fantastic Four before in a mini-series and it was called "Fantastic Four versus X-Men" so you can even use verbs to connect the separate parties...but there's a connection there. You don't say, "This series stars Superman Batman". It's, "Superman and Batman".

S o, what's the point? Titles have become almost unimportant. If the title is Superman Batman and I can look at the cover and see Superman and Batman...why have a title? I can not only fill in the missing conjunctions but also the missing nouns...and with the ever increasing use of covers which show postured stars of the story...maybe one day we'll have comics without pesky titles. Just pick up the comic which has Wolverine or Batman on it...no need to confuse us with varied adjectives and superfluous conjunctions.
