Exiles #55
Written By: Tony Bedard Art By: Jim Calafiore, Mark McKenna, and JC Published By: Marvel Comics This Issue: "Bump in the Night" Part 1
Plot: The Exiles find themselves on a strange barbaric type of Earth...or is it? Kulan Gath transformed New York into something out of a Conan story and everyone was transformed with it, believing themselves to be knights, peasants, minstrals, and forgetting their past lives. When the Exiles appeared, they succumbed to the same spell. Luckily, Spider-Man was left aware of the change and has enlisted their aid...but not against Kulan Gath. Gath found himself ousted when he released the dark side of Johnny Blaze, freeing the demon Zarathos. Zarathos proves himself to be a much worse leader and the Exiles' mission? To return Kulan Gath to power. I admit that I always like these tales where everyone is changed into other alternate forms, so it's cool seeing the Exiles like that. Also, the use of Zarathos, Morbius, Wendigo, and Jack Russell, Werewolf by Night, thrills me to no end because I'm a great fan of the Marvel horror characters. Rating:
Originality: Ever wonder what would happen if Zarathos was let loose of Johnny Blaze? Yeah...me too...so seeing him without Blaze's morality is very cool, and giving us the ever so brief concern that the Exiles won't remember who they are and what they are supposed to do increases the tension. Rating:
Characters: While Mimic, Sasquatch, Namora, Blink, Morph, and Beak don't make up my favorite Exiles roster, they still hold my interest...but as mentioned above, the real stars of this issue for me are Zarathos, Wendigo, Werewolf by Night, and Morbius. Rating:
Continuity: Because of the jumping from reality to reality, continuity is less of an issue, but what little we have to watch out for seems perfect here. Rating:
Art: Callafiore's pencils are nice. Rating:
