Story: “Live at the Winter Garden”

In 1973, over 90% of the human population is wiped out in nuclear war. The JOCOM, a vestige military government, is left in control of the United States. However, by 2007 the remaining population has settled into a gang society living in the tops of skyscrapers above the flooded city. That is the world of Zero Killer.

Our protagonist in the postapocalyptic nightmare is Zero, a loner, a sort of Ronin without gang connections but willing to hire his services out to gang leaders in need, like Black Dahlia, leader of the Black Cats. Dahlia needs Zero to capture two runaway gang members. He finds them chasing a young woman called Stark. He seems like a noble man, but we get the impression that saving Stark had less to do with doing the right thing and more to do with finishing his job. But he lets Stark tag along as he returns the recluse Black Cats. Along the way back to The Chrysler, they are almost spotted by headhunters in a helicopter.

Nelson, in this first issue, gives us a lot to chew on, but leaves plenty of questions. How can Zero survive without gang affiliations, especially considering how he talks back to the semi-nude Black Dahlia? Who are the headhunters? Who is Stark? Now that we’ve seen a little about The Black Cats, what are the other gangs, The True Bloods and The Jokers, like? Nelson’s postnuclear world is interesting and I want to see more.

Camp’s art with Stewart’s colors help bring Nelson’s world to life with crisp, sleek images and dynamic action scenes. Speaking with Camp, he says his art gets better in issue two, which makes me wonder what to expect.

If you like postapocalyptic stories such as Escape from New York or A Boy and His Dog, or any of the other myriad of examples, then you should check out this excellent addition to the genre.
