Comic Book Review: Hack/Slash #3
Hack/Slash #3Written by: Tim Seeley
Art by: Emily Stone
Colors by: Courtney Via

Cassie Hack has been taken to another dimension inhabited by strange demons and…Elvis Presley? These demons, and Elvis, work for ancient gods who do not have the power to create. However, they desire virgin women to impregnate.
Meanwhile, Vlad’s trying to figure out how to help her, but he has little chance of helping as long as he’s a virgin. And the possessed band, Acid Washed, is planning an even larger concert bringing them even more victims.
Tim Seeley’s Hack/Slash is a wonderful, not-too-serious exploration of a slasher world. While we’re still in the first arc, I wonder if an ongoing series is really necessary, but there hasn’t been an opportunity for Seeley to take advantage of the ongoing format, so we’ll see. But while we wait to see, we can continue to enjoy the comedy and gore. Cassie’s tough as nails, intelligent character is a stark contrast to the typical females we find in this series, stereotyping your average slasher victims in the movies: the ditzes, the sluts, and the drunks.
Cassie is complemented by the endearing, heartfelt Vlad who can evoke such sympathy from us. While his attempts at losing his virginity were kind of amusing, the humor doesn’t stand out as you just feel sorry for the poor guy.
Seeley’s captivating characters and enjoyable plot making fun of metal bands is supplemented by Stone’s art and Via’s colors. Stone masterfully communicates the characters mood with her facial expressions…well, not HER facial expressions, but the facial expressions of the characters that she draws. One scene, where Cassie pets some demonic dog to get some information, shows her distaste at the act without the need for an “eww” or “ugh” or other grunt of disgust that some writers might include to be safe. That’s a credit to Stone’s art.
If you like horror films and comic books with a slight tone of humor, then don’t miss this series anymore! Hack/Slash #4 is due out in August with a byline mentioning Cassie and…tentacle porn?
