Story: The Extremists Part 1

*SPOILERS*

“The Extremists” starts off with Caliban and Leech trying to find the Morlocks. Unfortunately, they have set a trap for the two former Morlocks. Leech is captured and Masque uses his flesh warping powers on Caliban and let him go.

Meanwhile, at the X Mansion…

Warpath, Nightcrawler, and Professor X have returned to Earth with the Starjammer Hepzibah after confronting Vulcan while he claimed the thrown of the Shi’ar Empire. Now, as Beast and Nightcrawler express concern over the Professor’s restored powers, Xavier discovers Caliban’s approach.

Warpath and Hepzibah are sparring in the yard when Warpath detects a familiar smell. He runs to help his friend Caliban as one of the Sentinels guarding the school moves to intercept the “possible intruder”. As Warpath and the Sentinel pilot debate who’s going to take care of Caliban, Nightcrawler ports in to get the injured mutant to safety while Storm, responding to a call from Xavier, threatens the Sentinel pilot with the resources of the Fantastic Four and the nation of Wakanda.

The X-Men figure Masque and the Morlocks are up to something, so they are going to find out what they are up to.

Brubaker seems to know how to keep me happy. In the previous arc, I wasn’t really happy about the sudden retcon of Vulcan into X-Men history, and Darwin has one of those powers that annoys me because pretty much no limits are established. But in the same story arc I get to see Gladiator, the Imperial Guard, and the Starjammers, all characters who I feel don’t get enough exposure.

Here, Brubaker keeps me happy with the Morlocks, another group from my formative X-Men years that I’ve greatly missed. In fact, the Morlocks he has chosen to use are wonderful. Masque is the evilest of them all. Bliss is one of the strangest of the strange. Litterbug is the best Morlock from the Morlocks 2002 Limited Series, and Erg was a little seen member from the Mutant Massacre storyline, and I look forward to seeing some more of him. Not that I see anything wrong with this plot yet. Brubaker, at least, gives us something to go on with the plot. He gives us some action. He keeps this introductory chapter interesting and dramatic.

Larocca’s art is great. His depiction of Hepzibah’s graceful, catlike movements is perfect. However, I can’t quite see what it is that Masque did to Caliban. He looks the same as when we saw him at the beginning.
