Marvel Zombies vs. Army of Darkness #2
Written by: John Layman
Art by: Fabiano Neves (p) and June Chung (c)
Cover by: Arthur Suydam
Published by: Marvel Comics and Dynamite Entertainment
Story: Marvel Team-Ups
*Spoilers*
The zombie epidemic is off and running in New York city as superheroes left and right are getting bitten. Ash, hero from the popular Evil Dead series is here to save the world with Spider-Man’s help…until Spidey gets bitten too, although his irradiated blood seems to be slowing down the transformation.
Ol’ Peter does what he usually does, goes off to save Aunt May and Mary-Jane, but don’t worry, Ash isn’t left alone in a world full of super zombies…he’s got the help of Frank Castle, The Punisher.
As Frank starts killing villains who aren’t infected because, well, they’re villains, Ash starts to wonder if The Punisher is the kind of guy with whom he should be partnered. But it doesn’t take him long to find someone he’s more comfortable working with…The Dazzler!
They head to Dr. Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum to see if he can help them find The Necronomicon, the only thing Ash knows of to defeat the Deadites. But shortly after arriving outside the Sanctum, Ash gets ambushed by…Howard the Duck!
Naturally, you shouldn’t expect high literature from this combination of two less than serious titles. As this story’s title suggests, this issue is really just a series of team-ups for Ash to go through. There are the usually Marvel Zombie humor with Wasp flying around with an ear, the Blob running frantically down the street from a group of zombies, and of course the zombie Howard the Duck. We have Ash’s persistent…uh…charm?…as he takes the time to ogle Dazzler, beautifully drawn by Neves. But there’s also a brief touching glimpse of serious horror as we get a close-up of Thunderball’s face as he tries to fend off some super zombies. Neves draws his look of fear convincingly and touchingly.
