*Spoilers*

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning let’s us see how the Hewitt’s, and specifically Tommy, aka Leatherface, got their start as the cannibalistic killers we’ve grown to know and love. But other than Leatherface’s birth, there’s nothing that sets this movie as a prequel rather than just another sequel.

The Beginning doesn’t really explain anything. We now know that Leatherface was born in a meatpacking plant, his mother died during his birth, and he got dumped in the trash. He was found and carried back to the Hewitts where he grew up and began working in a slaughterhouse until it got shut down, sending him on his first killing spree.

We don’t learn from where his fascination with chainsaws stems. His first use of one was just happenstance. His decision to cut a victims face off and wear it seemed equally random. We don’t learn why the Hewitt’s eat people or how that started. Unlike what you would expect from a prequel, this movie doesn’t explain anything.

As a gory slasher flick, it’s good though. It’s intense and shocking, though not really anything to make it stand out from the others…well, except for R. Lee Ermey. Whether he’s doing comedy or horror or anything else, Ermey is fun to watch. He, not Leatherface, is the star of this movie.

It’s not bad if you are just looking for some gorror, or if you like other Texas Chainsaw Massacres, then rent it. But if you are looking for some in depth exposure to the Hewitt’s origins, well…you’re not really going to get what you are looking to find.
