Review: Ultimate Fantastic Four #33
*Spoiler War Below*
Title: Ultimate Fantastic Four #33
Written By: Mike Carey
Art By: Pasqual Ferry
Story: God War Part 1
Published By: Marvel Comics
Well, I've never read an ultimate title that I didn't like. Sure, some titles have had their occasional mediocre story line, but certainly nothing to ever really complain about...until now.
First noticable problem...the art. I'm not a real art person...I don't know style and technique. A lot of people can look at some art and tell immediately who did it and I typically need to see the name. I don't know whether it's the pencils that I have a problem with, or the inks or colors, so I hesitate to say that it's Ferry's art, and I'm certain part of the problem IS the colors. Looked kind of neony to me. Reminded me of those colorful and shiny Christmas ornaments that I don't like. See, told you I'm not an art person. But the characters don't quite look like themselves...and, no sir, I don't like it.
But as someone who's not an art person, so I can still enjoy a good story despite bad art. But this issue doesn't help me there either. It involves a group of extra-diminsional beings who apper in a department store where Reed and Sue happen to be shopping. Naturally, there's a bit of confusion and everyone's fighting. Reed and Sue are quickly defeated. Problem...Reed gets shot...with bullets. Mr. Fantasic has the ability to stretch and it's to the point in the Ultimate world that when he's not stretched, it's not like he's a normal human...he makes a comment in this issue about his organs being in different places. But...he's down by bullets. Ferry even shows his body stretching with the bullets, so how would they pierce his skin? I don't buy it. The story in general is overly complex. Misunderstandings are understandable, oddly enough, but both sides are good guys. The extra-diminsionals aren't out to hurt anybody, but everybody is so quick to fight. You'd think one side or the other would say, you know, maybe things aren't as they appear. Especially Reed, Mr. the Negative Zone is ok to visit and this Nihil guy seems nice.
Oh, in case you didn't notice, the visitors in this issue are swipes of DC's the Forever People. Both ride a 5 seater motorcycle type contraption, both have handheld devices which are apparently alive and which provide a variety of functions, the Motherbox and Seed. Both have 5 members:
Threshold = Mark Moonrider
Grail Fountain = Serifan
Vykni = Vykin the Black
Dreamcatcher = Beautiful Dreamer
Big Bear = Magnificent Brute
I don't mind in theory. Marvel and DC have been doing this kind of thing for years. The Shi'ar Imperial Guard are based on the Legion of Superheroes, the Justifiers were based on the Avengers, the Squadron Supreme was based on the Justice League, and the Extremists were based on the 7 biggest Marvel villains. So they do it all the time. I am disappointed, however, that it was so obvious when I first saw them in the comic I thought of the Forever People. I usually have to have this stuff pointed out, but I got this immediately.

Only half a mind. They barely seem like the Ultimate FF that we've seen for the previous 30 issues, but it is them...and I like the Forever People, so I give credit for swiping from a good team.

I know what you mean about the colors. I didn't get the book but I saw the cover and I said: wow, they should have kept Justin Ponsor on the book.
he's the best painter there is.
