Review: Flash #4
Flash #4
Written by: Danny Bilson and Paul Demeo
Drawn by: Ken Lashley and Sal Velluto
Published by: DC Comics
Story: "Fast in the Life Lane"
*SPOILERS BELOW*
There have been four Flashes and 3 have worn basically the same costume. We've moved on to Bart...formerly Impulse and ever so briefly Kid Flash. Now Bart seems to have the Speed Force in him. All of it. No other speedster has access to it. With Barry and Wally dying in Speed Force related accidents, Bart's a little weirded out and is afraid to use his powers. He's getting help at STAR Labs from the daughter of Manfred Mota, the only person to have fought all three of the previous Flashes. Also, Keystone City has a new hero...Bart's roommate who has become The Griffin. Except, he's pretty reckless and people keep dying, or almost dying if not for the intervention of the original Flash, Jay Garrick.
The Flash will always be a great comic as long as it is written well and the villains are carefully used. Flash has always had great villains, and Bilson and Demeo are handling the book fine. First, they take the bold, risky route by creating a new villain in the anti-hero The Griffin. He's impressing me, but unfortunately it appears he won't be around for long as his powers seem to be eating away at his body.
The Flash team continues the risks by using not one of the common Flash villains like Captain Cold, Gorilla Grodd, or Zoom, but by bringing back a little known Manfred Mota. Mota fought Garrick as Atom Smasher, Barry as Professor Fallout, and Wally as Fusionn. He's even fought a future Flash as a plutonium monster. So, some may say that bringing back Mota one more time isn't all that risky...just following the tradition of every Flash fighting Mota. Well, Mota, with his three different identities, is small potatoes. But I think it's cool that they brought Mota back for the first arc.
Jay Garrick is getting a lot of panel time in this series as Bart is resisting becoming the new Flash, which I enjoy. I love Jay. He's my favorite Flash of all time.
One problem...the art doesn't seem to be coming together quite yet. Bart is costume seems particularly awkward.
