Ok, I love the X-Men. (Though I dropped X-Men because they brought Sabretooth and Mystique into the team...I can't get behind that.)
I love Joss Whedon...Firefly was Da' Bomb! And, ok, I wasn't a fan of the whole Buffy et. al. stuff. But all he needs is Firefly.
And thus I wasn't surprised that I loved Astonishing X-Men. I don't love the schedule, or lack there of...it's erratic...I'll get back to the scheduling problem in a minute.
It seems that the Hellfire Club is back together: Sebastian Shaw and Emma Frost with Cassandra Nova and Negasonic Teenage Warhead. I love Shaw and I love Emma...when she's a bad guy...I've hated her since she turned good, but we know it's not really Emma...it's someone calling herself Perfection. I also despise Cassandra Nova. Let's just say that the last time I dropped X-Men, it was New X-Men, and Grant Morrison was writing...and Nova was one of many reasons I had to stop that title until Morrison was done. I do like NT Warhead...Despite it's cumbersomeness, I think her name is cool.
So, the Club is back and kicking X-Men tail. But there's one hang-up...3 of the 4 members of the Hellfire Club have mental abilities...Emma, Nova, and Warhead...so Whedon's doing a lot of illusion stuff, making Kitty think she's had a baby with Colossus, etc...which is interesting to a degree except, when the comic comes out irregularly, you can forget what happened last issue. And while we're trying to figure out what's going on, there's really not a lot of action. And Shaw's just...there.
There is also Ord and Danger escaping from SHIELD and crashing into the manion to seek their revenge...or whatever their plan is. I alternate between liking and disliking Ord. I don't quite follow what his intention is and what he wants Colossus for. Danger I liked when she first appeared, but I'm not sure I see why she would work with Ord.
While not gripping, it's not bad either. Cassaday's art is good, though I don't know who the chap on the last page is supposed to be. Just Whedon's story here is very confusing. I know it'll be explained, but I don't like being in the dark for this long.

Rating: 3 Worms...Good characters, good art, probably good story, but I'm too confused to go more than 3
