Review: 52 #9

I've been enjoying 52. I think it's a great effort to give the best of both worlds. A quick jump ahead allowing righters the chance to change things immediately without having to spend several issues setting up the change and carrying through with it, and yet still allowing us, the fans, to see what's going on. Marvel should have done something like this when they did the one year later thing with the X-Men.

But I enjoy 52 despite everything else. I am really annoyed with the characters. Booster Gold's been on my shit list since the series began. We don't get to see Booster this issue, but lord, we see Natasaha Irons.

I've liked Nat for along time. I liked her more than her uncle, Steel. you notice that "-ed" on "liked"? She's annoyed the oiss out of me in this series. I mean, she's making her own armor and she's wearing a sports bra and shorts. Then, she complains to Steel that it's not fair cause it's hard and she's got burns everywhere. YOU'RE WEARING A BRA AND SHORTS!?! You get burned, it's your own damn fault.

Then, poor Steel is transforming into metal. She answers the phone from someone calling to tell Steel that the transformation IS caused by Lex Luthor's metahuman thing, and Nat jumps to the most idiotic conclusion. Of course, this doctor from STAR Labs os calling to tell Uncle John that his transformation is a result of Luthor's metahuman thing because Uncle John went to Luthor to get superpowers. Nat, honey, if he went to Luthor looking for powers, would he need STAR Labs to tell him his transformation is the result of Luthor?

I know, I know...she's a teenager, blah blah blah. Not cutting it. Teenagers have deductive reasoning just like everyone else. they choose not to use it, they get no sympathy from me.

Now, all that happened last issue. Let's deal with this issue. She wants to be a superhero. As a superhero, she fights with Uncle John and, during a moment of peace, slugs Steel in the gut! HE COUGHS UP BLOOD! You ain't a hero, honey, if you punchin' people unawares.

Know who else annoys me? Renee montoya. I liked her at first, and 52's my only exposure to her that I know of, but damn, she got annoying quick. She seems awfully whiny. I think they're going for tough, but it's coming across whiny to me. It annoys me.

And what the hell is up with Animal-Man's powers? Didn't he used to only take on the attributes of animals around him? So, is it me or does it appear that he controlled some tentacled thing. I assume tentacled, because the other option is that they are vines and he controlled them. It can easily be explained away as some native animal has the ability to do these things...control tentacle/vine things...But no attempt is made to explain it away. Smacks of Morrison, and I hate Grant Morrison.
