Civil War #1...Civil Spoilers Abound
Ok, Marvel's newest extravaganza has started...in the middle of the Annihilation shindig, I might add.
The concept is great. I mean, really...there's enough distrust to put a blind man in jail because he may be a superhero, and newspapers earn their money by saying what a menace Spider-Man and other superheroes are, and now...the legislators act.
Problems? The New Warriors are the impetus and they are dealt with poorly. They attack a group of supervillains: Cobalt Man, Coldheart, Speedfreak, and Nitro. Coldheart I barely even know of the name, Speedfreak I know is a Hulk villain, Cobalt Man has been around since...the 60's? But is rarely used, and Nitro I know more from the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe series...He's the only one of the four to have an entry. Why is that a problem? Because they helped Thor in a fight against the Juggernaut in their first appearance, and the fought Terrax the Tamer, and beat him all on their lonesome in their first issue. This time? They all die...
A team which once beat villains that gave the X-Men and Fantastic Four a hard time gets wiped out by a third string villain.
It'd make more sense to have the Avengers, even the new ones, the Fantastic Four, or the X-Men fight one of their commonly tough villains and have an elementary school with students in it get waylaid. But this sacrifice of the New Warriors? Speedball being the "leader" while Night Thrasher sits back and doesn't say anything? It seems awfully forced.
I want to see what happens. Everyone is going to annoy me...especially Tony Stark, but even Captain America annoys me in this first issue. I want to see what the resolution is...but I HATE the event which sets everything in motion. It's contrived. It doesn't consider the past of the characters involved. It's insulting to the fans of the New Warriors.
